Generic research: Magazine industry research

On the 8th of June I listened to BBC's Sounds podcast on how there's a new wave of political magazines which are experiencing an uprise in sales, despite the general decline in sales for print magazines

Here are the notes:

the new wave of political magazines - BBC Sounds

magazine sales are up
resurgence of magazines dealing with politics and current affairs
  • the news statement
  • the economist
  • the critic
they have a story then think of a cover

one of the magazines said ‘disagreeable things in an agreeable fashion’
one did a kanye west cover recently because they believed the dangers of cartoon front covers is that they could be a bit stodgy

the news statesman politics is sceptical, independent liberalism, magazine on the left but not programmatically on the left - they are, however, unpredictable with their positions
they’ve said the magazine was worse when it was a mouthpiece for labour
‘of the left but not with the left’
what they have in common, as they say, is that they tell the truth

They describe themselves as fair-minded and high minded

it’s all about story telling and telling stories

‘we keep hearing about print being dead but we haven’t seen it yet’

you must have a web presence - online magazines have to be vibrant as well to attract people to buy the magazines
you then need newsletters, podcasts etc as they said
