These conclusions and updates were made after a class meeting
BLM front cover
I have concluded that one of the front covers I will definitely do will be with a black/mixed race individual with a mask saying 'I can't breathe' - both linking to COVID-19 and the black lives matter movement- this person will be in the sea or bath
No radical politics maybe
- Initially, I planned to have a front cover with a placard saying 'No justice, no peace, defund the police'.
- However I recognised current affairs magazines are a commercial enterprise, so radical politics may alienate advertisors who would be my main source of income.
- It may be better to communicate a 'moderate' stance. Having said this, radical politics may appeal to advertisors who cynically may want to present themselves as allies in order to gain a stronger fanbase or draw more attention to themselves due to the shock-factor from the front cover.
- Regardless, I have decided I will not include the phrase on my front cover, but perhaps somewhere else
Ideal photo framing
The low-angled photoshoot with a nice colour contrast and face half-lit was a preferred photo layout/frame - much like the Black woman on the front covers
I'll need to do 5/6 different photoshoots
- 'I can't breathe' sea photoshoot
- Political activist
- How the teenagers spent their summer - 'I know what you did last summer' - this may be an online segment
- One based on mental health
- Nature/environment advert
- One based on sisterhood and unity - I can just think of topical issues in the news today and then think of a photoshoot to match this
+ Need to think about 30 second video
- Interview with activist
- Behind the scenes of the 'I Can't Breathe' shoot
- Protest placard
- Different zoom interviews with how they spent their summer
- Should I do a mock hype house
