10 things I learned
1. Make sure that you balance the time you spend on the two of your products- they are both given 25 marks
2. Make your two products convergent/ tied together- there needs to be a coherent sense of branding and both products need to promote each other- you can do this with:
- Link to website on magazine cover and contents
- Images of your magazine editions on your website
- A call to action pointing readers to the website
- Imagery needs to be taken from the partner product
- Logos and models need to match on the partner product
- Features on the website can be mentioned in the magazine- get interest
- Links between the two products should be greater than just mentioning each other- can include competitions offering merchandise e.g. tote bag, show instagram feeds, subscriptions, a newsletter etc (creates a sense of there being a wider brand that links the two)
3. Pay attention to detail- before you add an element to your product question whether it adheres to the codes and conventions of your form and if it actually makes sense e.g. how many followers you say you have on a linked Instagram page for example
*Conduct focused research into the codes and conventions- even for things such as the size of text on contents page- less successful magazines weren't mainstream enough to support the industry content or fully work as a fashion magazine
4. Understand clearly your form so you can demonstrate a high level of verisimilitude- your product looking realistic
5. Look through the requirements of the brief and make sure you've fulfilled every requirement
6. Indesign is better at handling text than photoshop- but not using software before doing your NEA can disadvantage one
7. Representations: Some of the most interesting work questioned issues of normative gender stereotypes
Use thoughtful, carefully considered representations
8. In regards to templates, it's recommended to start on a blank template- remember coherent branding though to allow for total creativity and personalization but if not, you can use an established template but make sure you edit it for you
9. Contents page: use a variety of images, a lot of copy, links/convergence to the website and don't leave too much white space
10. Your linked page also needs time and commitment- dont let it lack content or be divorced from the larger project- needs to appear linked- demonstrate it's relationship to the wider task and consider concepts like target audience and representation
bonus
11. On your website, capture a tone appropriate to the needs of the intended audience
DIGITAL CONVERGENCE: COHERENCE, SYNERGY AND MEANING- THERE NEEDS TO BE 'FINE EXAMPLES OF COHERENT BRANDING AND SYNERGY ENGAGING AND GIVING SUSTAINED AND INSIGHTFUL MEANING FOR THE AUDIENCE
